My Background: I have been tutoring high school and junior high school students since 1994. I was a very successful high school student who has always been interested in learning. I left college to study on my own, and soon after began tutoring others. I do not have a professional degree, what I do have is experience, an understanding of the subjects, and the ability to get through to my students.
What Type Of Help Do I Give: I have tutored students who needed many different types of help. Some require help understanding a specific subject area, more help than they are receiving from their teachers. They are doing the work and putting in extra time, but just don't get it. They will benefit from my one on one attention.
Another case is the student who has fallen behind in one or several subjects, through absence or neglect. This student needs help organizing his or her workload, keeping on task, and extra teaching time to cover the missed subjects.
Yet another type of student is one who is having organizational or motivational troubles. These students don't have trouble with a particular subject - in their cases it's school work in general which is posing a problem. They may need help staying on task, organizing their time and assignments, as well as additional teaching time. I do work with students like this, although in the cases of students with pure motivational problems it requires some additional planning and discussion.
What I Tutor: I have tutored in nearly every high school level course. Depending on what type of help the student needs, I can tutor even in courses I have never taken. The only exceptions which come to mind are foreign languages, although I can be of some help in French, having taken it for five years.
How I Work: In almost all cases, one hour (or one school period) is the minimum length of my tutoring sessions. These sessions can take place weekly, daily, or somewhere in between. Depending on the case I will attempt to make a suggestion as to the frequency of the meetings. I will say that in most cases more than once a week is necessary to get anything from the tutoring. Your schedule and budget will obviously influence that, but I try to make accommodations where possible. I don't like to waste my time, so I will work to make sure the student can get the time they need.
I am available afternoons, Monday through Friday. The tutoring sessions will probably take place at the Public LIbrary. I've found that students are better able to concentrate if they are out of their own home.
Cost: The charge for my tutoring services is fifteen dollars an hour or period. I will charge for any meetings that the student misses without warning me. Unless other arrangements are made, I will expect to be paid weekly, preferably by check.
